Open Regime

As part of the Open Regime, JAZZ is an educational program open to students of all ages.

Within the Open Regime, Jazz at the Setúbal Regional Conservatory is available to students of any age, designed for those who want a flexible, personalised pathway centred on music-making. Whether you are starting from scratch, developing your skills, returning to music, or exploring a new language, this programme adapts to each student’s goals and pace.

And here is what makes jazz truly special: jazz is a “musicians’ school.” The skills developed through jazz, listening, rhythm, creativity, reading, harmony and interaction, are highly transferable and can strengthen performance across many areas, including classical music, pop, rock, composition and music production.

Who is Jazz (Open Regime) for?

O Jazz em Regime Livre é indicado para:

Children, teenagers and adults who want to start learning jazz;

Musicians who wish to develop improvisation and jazz vocabulary;

Students looking for a complementary pathway alongside other studies;

Anyone who wants to play with others and gain rehearsal/performance experience;

Instrumentalists from other areas seeking more versatility, creativity and musical freedom.

What you will learn

The Jazz pathway at Setúbal Conservatory follows a practical, progressive approach, working on:

Improvisation (creating music in real time);

Rhythm, swing, groove and time feel;

Harmony and functional understanding of chords;

Reading, repertoire and interpretation;

Listening, interaction and musical communication;

Combo/ensemble playing.

Why jazz helps in other areas of music

Learning jazz is not only about a style—it develops tools that benefit any musician. Jazz helps you:

Improve timing and rhythmic precision;

Develop deeper listening skills, essential in choir, orchestra and chamber music;

Understand harmony more clearly, improving reading, interpretation and memorisation;

Build independence and musical confidence;

Expand creativity and problem-solving in music;

Play better in groups, with stronger interaction and ensemble awareness.

How classes work (Open Regime)

In the Open Regime, students choose the subjects and level of support that best matches their goals. There is no obligation to follow a formal curriculum, allowing for a more independent and flexible learning experience, guided by specialised teachers and focused on individual progress.
