Learning and growing through music.
Varied musical experiences that develop listening and musical vocabulary.
Music Initiation (ages 3–5) at the Setúbal Regional Conservatory aims to provide rich and varied musical listening experiences, supporting the acquisition and exploration of musical vocabulary. At this age, it is essential that the child’s musical environment is diverse and stimulating, as learning is built through comparison, repetition and continuous exposure to sound.
From ages 3 to 5, classes focus on developing:
Musical listening experiences and attention;
Musical vocabulary acquisition (tonal and rhythmic);
Expression through singing, rhythm and movement;
Foundations for future aural skills, performance, reading, writing and musical creation;
Teaching approach (Edwin Gordon).
According to Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory, musical learning should happen in a way that is similar to learning a mother tongue: just as language development depends on the quantity and quality of words a child hears, musical development depends on the quality and frequency of musical input. What a child learns in the first years of life becomes the basis for later development, so building a strong listening vocabulary at this stage is essential for future learning.
In Music Initiation classes at the Setúbal Conservatory, children take part in activities such as:
Singing;
Chanting rhythmic songs;
Listening to recorded music;
Movement games and spatial exploration;
Learning tonal and rhythmic patterns, applied according to Edwin Gordon’s learning sequence.
